This session will explore the contemporary significance and future possibilities of animism and vernacular cultures, using art and mythology as guiding threads. Our guests will be Toshiaki Ishikura, a mythologist and specialist in artistic anthropology, and Antoine Bertin, a sound artist who combines science, data, and field recordings to explore audio experiences of the living world. Through Antoine's video-sound works and Ishikura's lecture on mythology and animism, we will probe clues for reconnecting with the multidimensional and intertwined worlds of life.

・Antoine Bertin〔Artist〕
Antoine Bertin is a european artist working at the intersection of science and sensory immersion, field recording and sound storytelling, data and music composition. His creations take the form of listening experiences, sound sculptures and audio meditations on the realm of the living. His work has been presented internationally (Tate Britain, Palais de Tokyo, Serpentine Gallery, KIKK festival, STRP festival, Sonar+D, CCCB Barcelona, Dutch Design Week, Nuit Blanche Paris, le 104 etc.) He produces a quarterly show called “Edge of the forest” on NTS radio weaving together field recordings, data sonifications and science inspired meditations. Studio Antoine Bertin was created in 2018, bringing together a multidisciplinary team for the development and production of listening experiences.

・Toshiaki Ishikura〔Mythologist/Anthropologist〕
Associate professor at Akita University of Art. Research on “mountain goddess” based on trans-Pacific comparative mythology; art anthropology; collaborative projects with artists. Member of Cosmo-Eggs (2019) at 58th La Biennale di Venezia International Art Exhibition, Japanese Pavilion. Co-author of “Wild Tour: 12 journeys around archipelago myths” (co-author Masaru Tatsuki, Tankosha Publishing, 2015), “Lexicon: Contemporary Anthropology” (co-editor Katsumi Okuno, Ibunsha, 2018), etc.
