Food, Agriculture and Animism: Food and Spirit rooted in Climate and Land

This session will dive into the world of animism from the viewpoints of food and agriculture, with distinguished navigators; Ruud Hendriks, a researcher and teacher at the biodynamic-agricultural institute “Warmonderhof” in the Netherlands and Yasunobu Tamari, a researcher and author of "Food and Animism" Taking biodynamic agriculture, a cyclic farming method by Rudolf Steiner, as a clue, Prof. Hendriks takes a holistic view of agriculture and explores the relationship between food and spirit, the supernatural elements of the planet and soil, and food-health and individualism, which are not standardized.

Yasunobu Tamari traces the roots of food culture and history in various regions, and redefines awareness of the world and spirituality, such as animism and natural worships, in the linkage of climate and natural landscape.
By combining the perspectives of both speakers, we will explore animism as a relationship between food and spirit, and as something that emerges from the inevitability rooted in the climate and landscapes.

・Ruud Hendriks〔Researcher / Teacher〕
Ruud Hendriks has been educated in Arable farming, Plant breeding and Bio(dynamic) farming (Wageningen University). After he finished his study he started teaching soil fertility on Warmonderhof (www.aereswarmonderhof.nl ) where his curiosity in biodynamic aspects grew during the years. Ruud spends a lot of time in the field, digging soil profiles and discussing with farmers about conversion to organic and biodynamic farming. The last two years he specializes on circular farming, taking experience from bio(dynamic) agriculture into a broader agricultural context. Society and farming have grown apart, which is not a sound basis for future farming. How can we reach real circularity and keep quantity and quality in balance, feeding 10 billion people?

・Yasunobu Tamari〔Designer / Art Photographer〕
Born in Tokyo in 1979. After dropping out of high school, he joined Elephant Design Inc. where he learned design methods to realize the vision of management. In the 2000s, he worked with cultural anthropologist Shinichi Takemura and Sustena Inc Maekita Miyako to design information on environmental and social issues. He has also worked on local primary industry projects and participated in "nishihour" in Nishiawakura Village, Okayama Prefecture since 2010 and "Tohoku Taberu News" since 2013. He established the information design firm Etupirka in 2018, utilizing information design methods, and has been researching and writing a book titled "Food and Animism" since 2020.
